Academic Counseling

Academic Counseling

Life Chiropractic College West students come from a wide variety of cultural, personal, familial and academic backgrounds. Life West has an Academic Counselor on campus to assist students adapting to the rigors of chiropractic school.

The realities of being a chiropractic student can make it challenging to maintain one’s overall sense of well-being. Academic counseling complements chiropractic by helping students optimize their level of functioning. Students often access counseling services only after circumstances escalate. Counseling offers preventative techniques and strategies for avoiding personal crises and maintaining psychological, emotional and social wellness.

The Academic Counselor will work with you individually to help identify more efficient or effective ways of handling the demands of the program. As a result, the counselor’s role may shift or overlap from and among the following areas:

  • Study Skills Training – to determine learning styles, establish optimal study patterns, identify available resources, adopt relaxation techniques, evaluate test-taking strategies, address impediments to the learning process and more
  • Personal Issues – to address specific concerns interfering with academic progress such as anxiety or to optimize overall level of functioning through verbalization, meditation, visualization
  • Accessibility Services – to address learning barriers such as known or suspected disabilities and to facilitate the provision of accommodations upon receipt of documentation substantiating a disability
  • Other Interests – to receive life assistance resources, guidance on discrimination issues and complaint resolution, the Mindfulness program, the Alliance for Therapy Dog program, or Life West’s domestic service learning program called “Mission Trip: America” (MTA)

Here are other areas where the Academic Counselor can assist you:

  • Learning stress management, relaxation

  • Developing organizational skills
  • Overcoming test anxiety
  • Learning new communication skills
  • Coping with grief, loss, and depression
